There are 160 known Russian spies presently in the US. That is a surprisingly increasing number from the 115 known spies in 1991. Many of these seemed to be among military intelligence officers trying to steal secrets and recruit American spies. Most others are working in the russian Embassy in Washington. The number of spies began to increase in 1996 after President Boris Yeltsin appointed Alexander Lebed as security chief. President Vladimir Putin, a KGB veteran who wants Russia rebuilt as a world super power, has continued to increase spies in the US.
