Kim Philby(Harold Adrian Russell) was born in 1912 in Ambala, India.  He was a British intelligence officer and a Soviet spy.  Philby passed information onto the USSR during the 1940's and 50's.  In 1936, he was recruited as a spy for the USSR as well as Burgess, Maclean and Blunt.  In 1940, Philby joined the British Secret Intelligence Service and was promoted in 1944 to running the new Anti-Soviet section in London.  In 1946, he was made a member of the Order of the British Empire.

In 1949, Philby became the chief British Intelligence representative in the US working with the FBI and CIA. In 1950, he informed the Soviets about an attack into Albania, which would have assured the Soviets defeat. In 1951 he also informed Burgess and Maclean that they were under suspicion and they defected to the USSR soon after. Philby was interrogated in 1956 shortly after resigning from the intelligence agency.  He was again interrogated in 1962.  In 1963, he fled to the USSR where he gained Soviet citizenship.  He lived there until his death in 1988.
